NASA's FIRMS Provides Fire Data for Resource Management
Active Fire Data from MODIS and VIIRS
The NASA LANCE Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) provides near real-time active fire data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instruments. This information is used by firefighters, scientists, and resource managers to track and manage wildfires around the world.
Fire Maps and Data
The FIRMS fire maps show the locations of actively burning fires on a monthly basis. The data is processed quickly and made available to users within a few hours of satellite overpass. The maps can be used to track the spread of fires, identify areas at risk, and assess the impact of wildfires on ecosystems and human populations.
In addition to the fire maps, FIRMS also provides a variety of other data products, including:
- Active fire data in near real-time
- Historical fire data
- Fire danger forecasts
- Smoke and air quality data
These data products can be used by a variety of stakeholders, including firefighters, scientists, and policy makers, to better understand and manage wildfires.
