Lamar Hunt: A Visionary in American Sports

From the Gridiron to the Ice

WEB Lamar Hunt (August 2, 1932 - December 13, 2006) was an American businessman and philanthropist who left an indelible mark on American sports. Born to great wealth, Hunt leveraged his family's fortune to become a driving force behind the formation of the American Football League (AFL) and the National Soccer League (NSL).

A New Era of Pro Football

Hunt's passion for sports began at an early age. As a 26-year-old entrepreneur and sports enthusiast, Hunt saw an opportunity to create a new professional football league in 1959. Despite skepticism from established NFL owners, Hunt co-founded the AFL alongside seven other team owners. The AFL would go on to revolutionize the sport, introducing innovative rules such as the two-point conversion and the AFL All-Star Game.

A Soccer Pioneer

In addition to his contributions to American football, Hunt also played a pivotal role in the development of soccer in the United States. In 1967, he co-founded the National Soccer League (NSL), the predecessor to Major League Soccer. The NSL helped to raise the profile of soccer in America, paving the way for the establishment of the U.S. national soccer team and the growth of the sport at the youth level.

A Hockey Legacy

Beyond his involvement in football and soccer, Hunt also made significant contributions to the world of hockey. He was the owner and president of the Kansas City Mavericks, a professional hockey team in the ECHL. Under Hunt's leadership, the Mavericks became a community favorite and a symbol of the city's sporting spirit.

A Lauded Legacy

Hunt's vision and passion for sports left a lasting legacy on the American sporting landscape. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1972, the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1982, and the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009. Hunt's tireless efforts to promote sports and bring joy to fans across the nation earned him respect and admiration from all corners of the sporting world.
