Greece Stuns Portugal to Win UEFA Euro 2004
A Cinderella Story for the Ages
Greece defied all odds to claim their first-ever major football title, shocking Portugal 1-0 in the 2004 UEFA European Championship final.
The Greeks entered the tournament as massive underdogs, with oddsmakers giving them little chance of even making it out of the group stage. But Otto Rehhagel's side defied expectations, topping their group ahead of Portugal, and then beating France and the Czech Republic in the knockout rounds.
In the final, Greece faced a Portugal team led by the legendary Luis Figo and featuring Cristiano Ronaldo. But Greece's defense proved impenetrable, and they took the lead in the 57th minute when Angelos Charisteas headed home a corner kick.
Portugal pressed for an equalizer, but Greece held on for a famous victory. The win was a major upset and one of the most unexpected triumphs in European Championship history.
